About the Conference:
The public health consequences of natural and intentional disasters cut across many substantive areas. This unique multidisciplinary conference will bring together academicians, researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers from public health, mental health, community disaster preparedness and response, social sciences, government, media, and non-governmental organizations.

Conference Goal:
To provide an annual forum that continues to promote a dialogue and exchange of ideas between local health departments and others involved in improving public health preparedness, mitigation, response to, and recovery from emergencies.

Conference Objectives:
By the end of the Conference, participants will be able to:

• Understand the unique characteristics of “incidents without precedent” and implications for leadership
• Distinguish “active” from “passive” leadership and strategically determine appropriateness for circumstances that face preparedness leaders
• List (3) components of NDMS
• Describe Epidemiologic Surveillance conducted in a large sheltered population
• Describe two (2) essential components of providing healthcare in a sheltered environment
• List two (2) determinants of successfully evacuating tall buildings
• List two (2) strategies that an agency might employ to improve response ability of employees with dependents
• List three (3) areas of economic impact in an influenza pandemic

Who Should Attend this Conference:
The Conference is designed for public health professionals as well as individuals and organizations from both the public and private sectors involved in emergency public health preparedness and response. The diverse topics will be relevant to public health and medical practitioners, emergency medical services professionals, researchers, and managers involved in the wide range of emergency public health issues resulting from natural and human-generated disasters.

Poster Session:
The UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters will host a student poster session on Sunday, May 21, 2006, 6:30-9:00pm. This poster session will be held in conjunction with the evening reception; therefore, allowing presenters to explain their research and network with conference attendees.

Please note that posters should be on display by 6:00pm on Sunday night. Poster session participants should also plan to be available for the duration of the reception to informally discuss their poster and answer any questions from conference attendees.

Continuing Education:
CPHD is offering the following Continuing Education credits:

Health Educators, CHES:Sponsored by the Pacific Public Health Training Center, a designated provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH) in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. This program is designated for the CHES to receive Category I CECH in health education. PPHTC Provider Number: CA1162; NCHEC Provider Number: MEP2364. CPHD will issue a certificate of attendence with indication of the total CHEC earned.

Nurses, BRN: Continuing Education for BRN is provided by the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care. UCLA CPC is an approved CE Provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number: CEP-12416. Course objectives available upon request. The Center for Prehospital Care will issue a certificate of attendence with indication of the total contact hours earned.
