WORKSHOP: Listen, Protect and Connect: Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Children in All-Hazards Events

This training session will focus on building specific competencies to meet the mental health needs of the highest risk population in disasters and terrorism, children and families. It is designed to enhance skills and interoperability for "children's disaster systems of care" including schools/educators, Public Health, Mental Health (public and private), emergency departments, etc.

Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the rationale and practical application of a Novel continuum of care called "children's disasters systems of care" to address the full range of all-hazards mental health effects on our nations' most at risk population.
2. Implement Rapid Mental Health Triage and Behavioral Health Incident Management.
3. Apply Psychological First Aid specifically designed for children and for use by parents and teachers (Listen, Protect and Connect model).
4. Understand CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools) evidence-based school model.
5. Understand TFCBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for more severe child trauma/traumatic grief).
6. Build specific community-based disaster systems of care for children integrating public health, schools, emergency departments, mental health, and non-governmental organizations into a comprehensive "protective shield" for children and families.
